TIP OF THE WEEK

A lot of emphasis is placed on “force production” when it comes to being more explosive. On the other hand, a technically sound deceleration needs to happen in order maximise the force production prior to a jump, sprint or any explosive movement.

Despite all the strength, a poor penultimate step can be the Achilles heel for that explosiveness. Therefore, spending time to work on this aspect, which is also a way to train “stiffness”, might be your next breakthrough 💪

Absolute truth, especially if your sport requires speed and it should be done all year round!

After tonnes of conversation with sports coaches, injuries because of speed work is their main concern and the other would be uncertainty of what such session should be like. Therefore, coaches tend to assume loading on “fitness” and volume training during pre-season will get their athletes “robust” for the season. Which obviously back fires usually! 

Speed work comes in various forms. Such as the duration, intensity, intervals, volume and types. Some examples would be:

- proper execution of speed drills 

- Sled sprint of 5m to 15m

- Upright sprints for 30m to 60m

It’s usually poor execution of technique and over doing that’s the problem. Thus, learn to execute and spread out the intensity to fully maximise it 💪

He’s been training for sprints in the past 2.5 years with us and who knew (BUT WE KNEW) that such training would boost his overall athleticism and performance for a sport he didn’t train for.

The bottom line is, if you want to be agile, explosive and strong on the field, you will need to expose your body with specific technical and strength training to be a beast!

Speed is king! Everyone wants to be fast! However Speed is king! Everyone wants to be fast!

However, based on the timings in the video, does the fastest timing clock truly represent a good time? Yes and no!

Of course, timings don’t lie. A fast time is a fast run! However, if you observe and consider deeper, what happened to the form (posture and technique) of these individuals?

Was the fastest necessarily the most stable and balanced after crossing the line? If this was in a game situation, what will happen even if the athlete gets to the ball or tries to challenge for the ball? It’s unlikely that the challenge will be successful and potentially losing the ball instead.

Or in the situation where change or direction is required, will the athlete be able to do so?

Overall, it’s more energy costing and would have gassed out the athlete before the end of the match. Therefore, there’s so much more than just clocking a good time!
