Had the fortune to work on Faith’s speed on at the start of the year. Fast forward 8 weeks, her tennis skills are better displayed on court now with deadlier speed 🔥

May this be a moment to remember and inspiration to spur for greater heights 🚀

If you guessed “swimmer”, it would probably be the If you guessed “swimmer”, it would probably be the same as others due to how the movement looks. This athlete actually competes in canoe polo for our National Team @sg_otters .

The main point of this post is to think about what “sport specific” training really means outside of sports training session. Is there really such thing as “sports specific” and even so, how much is required to be sports specific?

The main purpose of this exercise is to strengthen the shoulder and the coordination of the “system” in order to tolerate training load from paddling and throwing of the ball.

Is this good for swimmers? Absolutely.
Is this suitable for badminton? Absolutely and the list goes on.

Physical training outside of sports training a.k.a Physical training outside of sports training a.k.a Gym training is probably your limiting factor to hit that PR or to express sport skills.

In this videos are a group of elite Silat athletes doing hurdle hops to train power and elasticity. This is something that all athletes will benefit from. However, it is nowhere near how the sport looks like, why? ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Basically, gym training (properly designed) main focus is to build qualities such strength, power and explosiveness. Most sports will usually train 85-90% similar while 10-15% focused on the nuances.

Example: A footballer will training very similarly to a tennis player in order to improve strength and power in the legs, core (trunk rotation and stability) and upper body. Subtle differences would be focusing more on the shoulder region for a tennis player which comprise 5-10% of the session.

So if you are looking at “sports specific” training in gym session for a footballer, then you are probably saying “kicking a 5kg ball to increase kicking ability”. No, that’s not how it works 😌

If you want to increase physical output, then the input needs to be focused on training the system (nervous system and force expression), not just the actual action.
